Localization Signals

Localization signals are short peptide sequences recognized by cellular transport machinery that direct proteins to specific subcellular compartments. Nuclear localization signals contain clusters of basic amino acids recognized by importins, while mitochondrial targeting sequences form amphipathic helices. Signal peptides direct nascent proteins into the secretory pathway through ER membrane translocation.
