Mechanism

Viral transcriptional activator that recruits host cell transcriptional machinery. Works synergistically with mammalian activation domains. Provides complementary activation mechanism to VP64/p65.

Characteristics

Component of VPR tripartite activator. Enhances activation when combined with VP64 and p65. Adds minimal size (~100 amino acids) but significant functional benefit. Particularly useful for activating viral promoters and some cellular genes.
