RNAs
Functional RNAs are the RNA species themselves: guides that direct a nuclease to a target, silencing RNAs that degrade a transcript, aptamers and ribozymes that act through structure, and mRNA payloads. Selection depends on the class of RNA, the gene or transcript it acts on, whether a shorter mature species is processed out of the expressed precursor, and the Pol III promoter needed to transcribe it.
